18 days without the boys

by Summerly Rowlands

18 days is a long time away from your kids. I mean, one or two days… now we’re talking (ha), but not 18. And not under these circumstances.

Sterling was able to see the boys a few times throughout our stay, I saw them once. They were brought to the parking garage after a trip to the barbershop.

We made a choice not to share with the boys all of the details as to why we were at the hospital with Izzy because we didn’t want to worry them and we know how their little minds work. We also didn’t want to expose them to the inside of the hospital. Mostly because of germs, also because of sadness.

For the few minutes in that parking garage, we shared smiles, hugs, stories… and tears.

All I can say is thank God for family.

The boys didn’t understand why they couldn’t stay in their own beds, why their parents weren’t coming home, why their sister was at the doctor’s for so long… but they did understand that they were loved.

And that got them through. That got us through.

To our parents, brothers, & sisters, thank you. Thank you for being there for our entire family. This hospital stay and always.
